Uploaded to scraps for a journal entry
____________________________

This is a beach on Portugal's protected west Algarve coast that I'd never visited before. The rock formations are incredible with these sheered rocks all along the beach and continuing up the cliff faces.
Sadly the tide was in the wrong place, all the way down the beach, and the sky had no interest in it, but the light was beautiful and it was certainly worth composing a few shots of the rocks.
This was taken hand held with a circular polarizer. The horizon is off....but this has had nothing done it it other than web sharpening. Forgive me for being sloppy, it's just a scrap :-)

i don't know what this shot is doing in your 'scrapbook' (=minor quality).
it's pretty evidently (at least one of) your most interesting shot(s).
clearly, it's nowhere near perfect; you already pointed out the anti-climactic sky, etc.
still, professionalism doesn't necessarily equal interestingness.

if, i for one, take a look at the photographs you yourself deem more 'professional' (=higher quality) here on DA then i must confess that the vast majority of them strikes me as perplexingly uninspired, undaring, or even clichéd (especially all those other hackneyed waterscapes, except may be 'west' for its slightly more tension-packed imagery due to the good old b&w).

in contrast 'vale de figuiera' makes use of a pretty stimulating perspective that lends dynamics and movement to the picture, just like the viewer would be coptering near-ground across the beach towards the ocean... that's thrilling. besides the landside seems devoid of humanity, resulting in an outlandish aesthetic that again is far more interesting than the shopworn postcard professionalism well-tried in your 'featured' gallery here on DA.

Thus, you may rethink your mindset.

Interesting comment, it seems you enjoyed making it.

I believe the point that people like yourself (who prefer to comment on rather than create images) fail to see and will continue to miss, is that that I make the images I make because they are a source of great pleasure to me. I care not for meeting any artistic or aesthetic standard that other people set, I take the images that you find trite and shopworn because I enjoy doing so. For me, there is no purer purpose in creation than that.
Done for the pleasure of the doing.

Perhaps this displays a singular lack of originality or inspiration on my part. Perhaps, but I'm fortunate enough that not only do I enjoy creating the images that I make, but I also make a living out of doing so. No doubt however, you see this is a poor reason. Why would anyone want to make a living out of doing something as uninspired and clichéd, when one could be doing something that someone like yourself finds daring and original?

As I said at the beginning, it's an interesting comment, and has given me pause for thought and to appraise my mindset.

On the one hand, whether to continue pursuing images that I love making, that the making of causes my heart beat a little faster. To embrace the fact that these "hackneyed" images enable me to make a living out of something I love, have opened doors to travel to some wonderful places, experiencing wonderful people and gaining stories that I'll keep with me forever.

Or on the other, to attempt to gain the respect of people like yourself - people who don't actually take photos but have plenty of opinions on how they should be taken by others. To meet the lofty, but laudable artistic values of a random critic on an internet site and forego my superficial shopworn approach, with all the accompanying advantages and pleasure I noted above.

It is indeed a dilemma, and I thank you for offering it so generously to me. However, after some deliberation, I have rather boringly decided to stick with the former, hackneyed, clichéd approach to photography.

I guess I've not gained your respect and admiration, have I? Shame.
Mindset unchanged, have fun with the comments!

indeed, an interesting comment of yours.
interesting in so far, as it displays how eagerly you try to turn me into ridicule.
me, a random guy on the internet who favors two of your works (and highlighting them in comparison with the main body of your DA submissions).

well, let me close in saying that all your onsets against my comment are ad hominem, i.e. all you have to say is, essentially, that i'm wrong as a person for (putatively) not creating images myself, for looking for quality in images others create, for not grudging others what (self-reportedly) makes them happy, etc.

in contrast all my criticism spoke solely of your work(s), i.e. what i found more or less laudable about it. (interestingly you have nothing to say about that, in contrast to my foolish self.) nowhere did i sneer at you like you did at me. and most certainly i did not blame you for pursuing what brings you happiness.

the mindset i did only address because the main body of your gallery on DA boasts of professionalism while, irritatingly, it's somewhat lacking in the imagination department (or whatever you like to call it). thus, i thought that you might've posted works on DA that you created with a special outlook in your mind, favoring professionalism over something that (surely not only) i find every bit as important as the former in photographic art.

now you are free to laugh at me as much as you like.
oh, i forgot, you already did.
