This was taken on the north east coast of Brazil in a small village called Tibau do Sul, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

I always enjoy shooting piers, but with this one I wanted to try a different composition, using the steps as leading lines to the pier. A wide angle lens made it possible for me to frame the steps, the lake and the sky. I measured the exposure from the wood of the steps, and used a 2 stop graduated neutral density filter to bring the sky into the exposure range of the camera and stop the highlights from clipping there. I wanted to use a long exposure, so I used a 9 stop neutral density filter, manually adding the 9 stops to the shutter speed.
