Ah, it’s been a while since I submitted a pier shot :D

The Photo

Took this last weekend on one of my first trips out shooting landscapes after a summer where I’ve only done street and wedding photography.
The clouds have returned to Portugal and it’s nice to be back out in the fresh air beneath a big sky again.

This is a location I found on Google Earth a while back and had been waiting for a decent looking sky to go and shoot it. It’s about 100 kilometers from my house, and quite a way off the beaten track. I doubt I’d have managed to get there without a GPS, as once you turn off the main road, you head through fields of cork trees before finally turning onto a dirt track and driving through about 5 kilometers of paddy fields.
Of course paddy fields plus river bank equals mosquito heaven, and I can honestly say I was eaten alive during this shoot, despite the fact that I was using repellent. I also lost my polarizer somewhere in the bushes along the water’s edge when I went to shoot an alternative composition at the side of the pier.

I guess its note worthy that this is a pier shot that’s NOT a long exposure. I almost always shoot long exposures when doing shots like this, and indeed I did again on this particular evening, but comparing the shots back on my computer at home, I preferred the definition in the clouds.

Stunning! I love how it seems like it's two worlds in one... A dark vs. light kind of thing.

Cheers mate, as far as I know, this really isn't a well known location....and I was pretty vague in my description about where it was.

Standing under it is probably possible, but the river bank mud is pretty deep here. I walked off to the side to get some banks shots and sank up to my shins (not pleasant in sandals), and got hammered by mosquitos. Might be one for the winter when the little bastards aren't such a nuisance.

I think the decision not to use the long exposure was a good one, the definition stands out is is much better for it.

I usually love your shots and this one is really nice....But... I don't know, maybe it's just because I got bad taste but I think it's a little uninteresting... I would have skiped the sand in the foreground and moved a little further out and maybe moved the pier out from the center... But that's just me and there is no doubt that you are the better one of us

I also love the transition from cool to warmth.....that is really fantastic.......and I also like this shorter exposure for the definition in the clouds. Great stuff!
Are you still itchy? ;p

Normally I do absolutely LOVE your work. With this one though I felt like it was just a bit too much of the pier in the foreground

Lovely done Andy!
I agree with you, I think this version (compared to the long exposure, and how I imagine it) is better :) the Clouds and the color is wonderful, and I like the water pattern :)

Superb shot, worth getting bitten alive, and losing a polariser for.
