Finally Spring is almost here, and the world feels like it's waking up again.
This is the first shot I've submitted that has been totally processed in RAW, and apart from the frame, hasn't had anything done to it in Photoshop.
It's also the first shot I've done with the Hoya ND400x filter ( a very dark neutral density filter which cuts almost all the light), which allowed me to shoot straight into the sun before it had set, and still use a 30 second shutter. The main problem with a filter like this is how difficult it makes it to see through the viewfinder, so composition and focus are tricky and need to be done before the filter is screwed in. I then took the exposure, and then dropped the ND graduated filter in place to darken the sky.
Please note that the far rock seems to be a little jagged along it's top surface which looks as though it's come from over-sharpening or poor resolution. It is in fact neither, it's simply the shape of the rock and is exactly the same on the original RAW file...which becomes apparent when examined at high magnification. I almost didn't submit because of this, I know people will comment on it. I isolated it when sharpening, so that rock hasn't had any sharpening at all.
Taken on Carcavelos beach, Portugal Nikon D80 - Sigma 10-20mm - Nikon cable release 30 seconds | f9 | 10mm | Hoya ND400x | Cokin ND grad (3 stops) Processed RAW in Apple Aperture, white balance, contrast and very subtle sharpening.
Ah, ND 400... I love the long exposure effect on water by my IR filter, and wanted to do something with normal light. I got a Cokin ND8 filter. When I first put it on the lens, I literally laughed out loud. It's such a joke. Even with a screw-on polarizer, it doesn't smoothen anything. Unless it's dark already.
Been looking for this filter that night on BHphotovideo, but even the 67mm one is bloody expensive...
Yeah, I know the Cokin filter that you mean, an ND8 is only 3 stops...so of your meter is reading 1/8 sec (which is already pretty low light) then you'll only get a one second exposure from it.
The ND 400 is nice, and there's a darker one from B+W [link] but they are both very expensive.
Still, they are great creative tools and worth the money
Maybe this began your stance against clear skies...
