The Photo

Of all the photos I took in Umbria, and of the various ones I took in this location on different evenings, this is my favourite shot.
It’s less dramatic than the others, less colourful, but for a couple of reasons, I like this more than Sibilini or Godspeed.

It had rained most of the day, and we drove up to this high plain more in hope than in expectation. The rainclouds stubbornly refused to clear, never letting through a crack of sunlight, but around sunset, it did finally let off raining and I decided to see if I could get some shots.
This was taken around 15 minutes after the (invisible) sun had set, and the wind was pushing the clouds across the plain at quite a speed.

The following evening I returned and got the light and colour I had hoped for, but after editing all the images from the trip, this is the one that I kept coming back to, and as I said above, became my favourite from Umbria.

This is a long exposure, with a 2 stop neutral density filter to balance the top half of the picture with it's reflection

The colors and the mood of this image are superb (I personally love heavy skies like this). In that regard, it is a superb image. The composition, however, doesn't feel right to me - and this is a personal view - it fells unbalanced, with too much "empty space" in the bottom half.

I like this Andy, but not as much as the other shots you have of the same locaiton, although I can see the appeal. From a technical standpoint it would have been nice to see more detail in the highlights (if there was any) and I also think that the sharpening of the mountain is a little heavy (see the halos between snow and mountain)

Glad you like it :-)

I've stopped putting prints up here on DA because I don't agree with how little the artist gets for the print sales. I offer prints through my website (there's a link in my sig) and the print quality is actually better than you get here at DA.

Thanks again :-)

Stunning mate; absolutely stunning. I love the composition, and the long-exposure. Colours are spot on too.

I can't really tell because of the lowered quality on the web, but does that mountain fade right into the cloud, or is there some more of a "definition" between the two in the higher-quality image? It just doesn't look right, but I'm hestitant to say for sure that they meld in such a way, without knowing what the photo ACTUALLY looks like. You can never tell with web-sized images. =\

Thanks so much, there is no distinction between the top of the mountain and the clouds...the peak was swathed in cloud, and that's part of the reason why I like the shot so much, that transition from earth to air.

Thanks again :-)

Ah. Me too. I love how the Earth just naturall blends into the sky. Your eyes follow the mountain to the peak, which doesn't really exists, and instead, you get lost in the clouds.

Cheers! :D
