Old shot from summer 2008. Skies are usually no good for shooting landscapes in summer months in Portugal, so I generally go out and try to shoot the area of the city where I live. I'd had a shot like this in mind for months, and spent quite a while over the summer trying to get it. These trams ("electricos" in Portuguese) really define Lisbon as they rattle through the old town, and I wanted to get a panning shot to capture the movement of one in really nice, late afternoon light. First, finding a spot on the tram route that wasn't in shadow when the best light of the day was around took a while, then waiting for a tram which I could capture without some other element entering the shot meant ages standing on the street waiting as there's around 15 minutes between each tram. I practised the panning movement and shutter times on passing cars, choosing 1/10 as the best speed to get motion blur, but still retain some detail.
Anyway, it took quite a few attempts, and on this particular day I was just about ready to pack it in and go home, just telling myself I'd do one more when I got this shot. The blur at the back is actually a kid on a bicycle hanging off the back of the tram and being pulled up the hill.
I originally submitted this to scraps over a year ago and I keep meaning to go back and re-shoot this shot with my D3, which has much better focus lock on moving subjects. Still, over the last year this has been one of my most popular prints locally as well as being one of my favourite shots that I did in 2008..I doubt I'll be able to get a shot I like more than this. So I thought it deserved to be submitted here as a proper deviation, hope you like it.
