Carrapateira by AndyMumford Carrapateira by AndyMumford
This is an older shot from last winter, when I spent the weekend in the south of Portugal. I was actually walking along the cliff tops to get to another location in order to shoot the sunset, when the sun broke through a hole in the clouds, illuminating the cliffs and causing the rainbow to appear.

I didn't really have much time to find an interesting composition, and only managed to shoot two frames before the sun disappeared for the rest of the day.

I added this to my favourites as much for the comments and really interesting discussion as for the picture itself (which i think is beautiful, by the way, the colour pallete is superb!). Will certainly be referring back to this in the future!

Very nice image Andy, but I have to agree with Hougaard, and Kirlian on this occasion about the rainbow.

The light is wonderful. I like the leading line of the cliff ending at the right corner. For me it is a well balanced composition...but for the rainbow. I have this feeling that it was more than a curse than a blessing for this image in the position it appeared. Have you tried this in b/w? I think it would look awesome.

Sorry for the long comment this huge message box made me :giggle:

Nice shot Andy. I just don't really know whether the off position of the rainbow actually adds to the image, but good work.

Cheers Hougaard.
I want your opinion, do you think the leading line of the cliff takes the eye out of the image?

:iconhougaard:
hougaard Featured By Owner May 25, 2010
I love the line of the cliff. Perfect i.m.o, but I feel that the rainbow on the right and cliff on the left leaves the eyes running out of the frame. The rainbow throws the comp of the cliff off.

I would like your honest opinions too Andy. I have a lot of respect for your composition abilities, but even more for your ability to translate visual into words. It's something I really struggle with and which is why I seldom give extensive comments on images.

Cheers for the feedback mate. This is a shot that's been kicking around my hd for a while and it's probably not really worth submitting (I just like the light and the sky) but I have this perverse thing where I don't like to submit several similar shots in succession, so I didn't want to submit another Scotland shot, and I didn't want to submit a regular rock/sea/sunset waterscape...so I looked around for what I had that was different.

As for my feedback...I'm quite cagey about critiquing other people's work unless I feel that I know them quite well. Years ago, someone ripped me up for saying something minor (I think it was about dirty filters or something) and said things like "You think you're some kind of expert?" and the thing is, I don't. I don't think I'm an expert at all and I'm not sure why I think I can say things to people that might help them improve, when my own work falls so far short of the standards that I see in other people's work and that I aspire to myself.
Your dedication and raw ability took overtook my own some time ago now matey, and although I occasionally do see things in your shots that make me think "I might have done it differently" that's not the same thing as thinking that I could make the shot better.
But I promise, when I have one of those moments, I'll let you know.

Take care, and submit more shots from Namibia already. I'm really looking forward to seeing them :-)

I think that once you get to a certain level the only real difference is not ablity or understanding but style. Everyone changes how they shoot as they develop but you get to a point where the difference you see between images is just style, not ability :)
I dont see images where I think 'I wish I knew how to do that' but rather, 'I wish I had thought of that'. To conclude, you are as good as anyone I know :D

It sucks that someone did that to you. I think you know more than your photos can advertise and your critique is worth a lot. You just don't shoot nearly as much as people like me and Alex and Stephen.

Email address? I'll mail you a fat bunch of jpgs from Namib. You know DA... wide angle and lots of contrast, the soft light, long shots and panos will never see the 'amazing whores' of DA.
