This was taken at Praia do Monte Clerigo, the same beach as this [link] but at a different time and with the tide much higher up the beach. I arrived at the beach, but the sun was hidden behind a cloud bank and the tide was so high up the beach, that all the rocks were covered, not leaving much to compose around.
I didn't want to waste the journey, so played around with some experiments. I was interested in the black rock and the sheered lines of the cliff, so tried to build a composition around them This required a two image blend, one for most of the shot, with the filter holding back the sky, and another (same exposure, but without the filter) to give me a better exposure of the rock in the top left, which I then blending in by hand. Im still new to blending, so this served as a good experiment....I need a lot more practice..the blend line looked fine as a PSD file, but after JPEG conversion I'm not so happy with it
Tripod, cable release and 3 stop ND graduated filter.
Cheers, glad you like it. There's nothing off to the right except more ocean, I wanted to get all the texture and lines of the rock in, so I actually composed more to the left with other shots. Yup, it's taken at 10mm with the Sigma
I have actually...a friend of mine who shoots with a 40D uses it. It's a nice lens, but I'll be perfectly honest and say I can't see a difference between it and cheaper lenses like the Sigma and the Tokina 10-22. However, if you ever come to sell it, it'll hold it's value better than the Sigma or Tokina...own brands like Nikkors or Canons always get more second hand than 3rd party lenses.
Keep it up!
